Cooking, Monthly Meal Plans

Monthly Meal Plan; April

Monthly Meal Plan; April

I can’t pretend that last month was successful – because unfortunately it was not in the least bit. My husband was out of town for work quite a bit and I was slammed with trying to launch my Etsy shop! We ate out a lot more than I would like to admit. We have reset and are ready for a new month and new meals – some of our favorites are making a comeback! I shopped this month with no regard to the meat we had leftover because I am always aiming to bring you a TRUE total of the cost of these meal plans. I am out of school and my kids are out of daycare for the next week so I had to make sure we had lunch foods. I also try to buy snack foods for the MONTH, but sometimes we go back mid-month. Our total before any mid-month runs was $300 – which is FANTASTIC for a family of four. We have made the bulk of our purchases and I know we can keep it under $400 for the month.

What is included in your “grocery budget”?

I think this will always be a source of debate. I do not include diapers in our grocery budget. I do not think that accurately reflects us as a family of four compared to other families of four. I do, however, include paper products and toiletries. We don’t buy them every month so any extra from the previous month just rolls over!

Do you make up all of your meals?

From scratch? No. LOL. I do, however, find recipes that look interesting and tweak them to fit our tastes AND time frame. Honestly I am sick of finding recipes that have 1,000 ingredients and take two hours. As a working mom, I just don’t have the time. So while my recipes are my own, they are inspired by some others. I also have a hard time writing recipes (weird, right?) because I don’t really measure much… I just scoop and dump and pour and mix and somehow it comes out delicious. I am, however, really trying to pay attention so you can recreate them in your kitchen!

Thank you for this! I’m starting to meal plan more and it just makes life a heck of a lot easier as well as making sure I am keeping up with a healthy diet. I love that you put it all on a calendar. Lately I’ve just been planning one week at a time, but I think I’ll try a monthly plan for May. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes! Monthly meal planning is a lot of work up front but it totally pays off in the end 🙂

  2. So question: do you swear by meal planing and money saving? I’m just getting into this whole idea. I’m keeping a 30 day food/grocery budget and I am looking for ways to save money. Any suggestions you have I’ll take! 🙂

Hey! Yes I really do – at first it is hard to stick to because I am used to flying by the seat of my pants so my mind changes ALL the time about what I want to eat. In fact, I am still working at being better about sticking to the meal plan but it has saved us so much money! Next month I am trying out a thing where I make a big batch of one thing on Sunday and then use it in all my meals the rest of the week – I am pretty pumped about that!

  3. Love the idea of making a meal plan. I do follow a general meal plan like the days when I’ll have meat, poultry or vegetables but otherwise its pretty flexible. Though I see the wisdom of specifics. Will try this week.

  4. I was including diapers in our grocery budget but I think I need to adjust it. I’ve been in a bit of a food rut, so I love seeing what other people are making for dinner.

Yes I had to take out diapers! They killed it!

  5. I keep trying time
And time again to meal plan and it never works. I need to make a plan and stick to it!

Even though I have this great plan I still struggle!

  6. This is amazing! Under $400 a month for a family of four is really great. I’m pretty good about weekly meal-planning, but planning the entire month is truly impressive!

I bet you could take your weekly plans and turn them in to monthly!

  7. 1- Happy early birthday. 2-this is a great set up. Some seem so complicated. This is simple and to the point.

      Thank you 🙂

      I’m all about simple 🙂

  8. I’m seriously impressed! A whole month of meal planning in one go! What do you do if you decide you don’t want stuffed peppers one night?

I’m definitely checking out lettuce wraps, that might be a fun way to mix up the mundane around these parts <3

      If I decide I don’t want a meal – I just move it to a different night! LOL happens a lot…

  9. I agree with you on meals that have 1000 ingredients and take 2 hours to cook. Seriously, who has time for that? I love menu planning and I love the meals you have planned. I will have to add them to my May menu to give us something new. Menu planning really is awesome, especially when your family is busy.

  10. I am very impressed that you shop and meal plan for the whole month. If I get a whole week done, I’m excited. Your meals sound great too!
