I’m not one to make resolutions for the New Year because I never keep them. It’s not that I don’t want to, I just can’t manage to make it work. This year I set some goals for myself that I felt were achievable and would make me feel like I had made an active effort for a *better* year. Last year wasn’t bad by any means but I think that you can always strive to make things better!
Focus on the good.
People generally have a habit of focusing on the negative. I usually say that is take 10 good things to overshadow a bad and I let that reign true in my life but I’m ready for a shift of focus. I’m ready for the bad to be something I conquer and squash out while reflecting on the good. My favorite quote says “every day may not be a good day, but there is something good in every day”. Sounds cheesy but it really is so true!
The good in each day can look different for everyone. For me, it might be that I got in bed at 9 instead of 11 and felt well rested. For someone else it may be that they received news on a job they have been waiting on for a while. One is more major and the other is minor but they are both still good. You will run yourself in to the ground if you focus on how everyone else has better “good” than you. Even on the days that can really suck, try to find some good. By no means will focusing on the good erase all your problems, but it can create a shift in focus to where you are able to look for positive amidst any negative that arises.
The way I am striving to conquer this goal is with a Gratitude Journal. My goal is to fill the journal and write something every day. I want to read through it at the end of this year and see how God has abundantly blessed me this year. My dear friend Hensley purchased this journal for me while on a medical mission overseas. I’ve saved it for some time waiting for the perfect moment to use it. Once setting my goal I realized that the time was right meow or never!
What ways do you focus on the good? Is it a thankful jar? Maybe you also do a gratitude journal! Share below, I’d love to hear!
Here are two good things about today for me:
1. My daughter is happy and content despite not being able to eat since last night! She is having ear tube surgery this morning but she is doing great.
2. My students are off to a great start with the sub this morning! I set some clear expectations for them with the sub for today and I’m happy to have a sneak preview that they were off to a good start 🙂
